The Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) of 1993 is a federal law that provides certain employees with up to 12 weeks of unpaid, job-protected leave a year for family and medical reasons, including the birth or adoption of a child, caring for a family member with a serious health condition, or dealing with one's own serious health condition. It also requires that employers maintain health insurance coverage for employees on FMLA leave in the same way they would if they were actively working.
