What is Domestic servitude?

Domestic servitude is a form of human trafficking that happens in private residences. Workers are not allowed to leave their employment and are often  underpaid and/or abused. Because domestic servitude takes place in private residences, it is very difficult to detect. A domestic work situation often becomes trafficking when an employer uses fraud or coercion to maintain control over the worker or if the worker is forced to believe that they have no other choice than to work. Many times, domestic servitude is a result of a perceived debt that was owed to get the migrant worker to the destination country. Sometimes victims are linked to a forced marriage.

Sex Trafficking of Adults and Children

Sex trafficking is a form of modern-day slavery in which individuals perform commercial sex through the use of force, fraud, or coercion. Sex trafficking victims are often recruited and then groomed by intimate partners or even family members. Victims can be of any gender identity or sexual orientation. Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Children (CSEC) is a form of child abuse that engages children in commercial sexual acts. And in fact, it is more common for children in the U.S. to be sexually exploited for monetary gain by family and friends than by strangers.

Examples of At-Risk Populations

A few populations are at a higher risk of being victims of human trafficking.

1
LGBTQ Youth

LGBTQ+ youth who are homeless or lack safe housing are at an even greater risk for sex trafficking.

2
Immigrants

The exploitation of immigrants by human traffickers is extremely common. Undocumented immigrants are especially vulnerable as they can typically be controlled with fear of deportation.

3
LGBTQ+ Population

Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning, and others in the LGBTQ+ community are vulnerable to human traffickers due to the bias and discrimination that they may face at their jobs and homes.

Examples of CSEC

Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Children (CSEC) refers to a range of crimes and activities, including:

Here are some myths to look out for:

  • -

Sexual abuse of a child for the financial benefit of any person

  • -

Exploitation in exchange for anything of value (including monetary and non-monetary benefits)

  • -

Enticement and transportation of minors for illegal sex acts

  • -

Children who are exploited in prostitution are trafficking victims, no exceptions
