Privacy Rule Definition
The HIPAA Privacy Rule (also known as the Standards for Privacy of Individually Identifiable Health Information) is a federal law that provides specific protections for the privacy of protected health information (PHI). The Privacy Rule sets limits and conditions on the uses and disclosures of PHI that may be made by organizations subject to the rule, called “covered entities.” The Privacy Rule establishes standards for the protection of PHI and requires covered entities to establish administrative, physical, and technical safeguards for the protection of PHI.
